How do I get rid of weeds in my lawn?

Julie
by Julie

I have a front lawn which is a mix of grass and weeds ( 20%), some kind of ground cover that is green but that spreads and turns brown in fall. Problem is the front lawn is a couple acres in size, I am a senior and do not have funds to get a weed and feed type that I used on past smaller lawns.

I had this problem for years until I found a great product that you attach to your garden hose Weed Stop for Lawns by Spectracide you can find it at Lowes’s for about $8.99 a bottle. I use it 3 x’s spacing it out over 4 months. Works like a charm & doesn’t hurt the grass!

PS get a long hose! Mine is 100 ft. long & I can always attach another one to it but haven’t had to as yet. I am on 1/4 acreage, my house is in the middle. I also am a senior & must be able to do it fast & cheap.

I cut grass for most of the year and I really hate weeds. What I have found is that if you cut your grass at about 2 inches high, eventually it will choke out the weeds, but it may take a month and a bit. Only for the first year though. The only time I ever cut the grass short is right before winter. It saves on water and no chemicals are leaching into the soil.

It does work, but it does take a bit of time. It also saves on your water bill. By the way, I have 4 acres.

Well, you might have a spaghetti party for your church or friends. Could you sublet the land for a community garden?

We are careful not to mow our lawn too short. A few inches tall helps keep the weeds from getting settled in the lawn. Also, if you use a product called Spectracide on the lawn it kills the weeds. Fall time is a good time to also use NEW grass seed as the weeds do die back as you said they are brown. Now is the time to get those areas filled with grass. Hope these several suggestions help, Julie.

What I had to do was buy from Home Depot a weed remover tool. They call it a Rocket Weed Remover. It is long so you don't have to bend over. (with a bad back you can't bend easily). You open the claws with a button, put over the weed, push tool down with a foot pedal into the ground, twist tool a bit and pull up. The claws are closed holding the weed. Then you release the weed by pushing the same button you used before to open the claws into a container (I used a 5 gallon bucket). It took me two days of 4 hours each because it was so hot in the summer here in Texas. You will have small holes in your yard from the tool. After you are through pulling weeds, spread grass seed all over you yard and water really good and every day until you see the grass has a good hold. I used from Walmart a Commercial grade seed then I didn't have to dig holes for the seeds. I spread the seeds very thick. I didn't skimp. My yard came back by the end of summer. I used soaker hoses because easier to move than a sprinkler and they really saturate the area. In my area we can only water two days a week but can use soaker hoses every day. Be sure to water your yard really with the sprinkler hoses at least every day. I did every day. We are stilling having days in the 60's in November. I water twice a week using my sprinkler system.

Hi Julie, you can try to pull or dig out larger weeds. Target the weeds with a spray bottle full of this solution, mix 1 cup of salt. 1 tablespoon of dish soap. 1 gallon of vinegar, pour into a spray bottle and spray weeds. Be careful not to spray plants that you love, or get it on the grass
