My grand mother left them out in the sun to dry and then when they rattled she would wax rhem. They keep for years unless they get broken.
I've heard of shellacing them once they have dried out too.
I’ve dried them out in the sun, then painted them with shellac. I’ve had a few of them for 5 years now
The gourds I have kept were put in a very dry place for the winter so they could finish drying out. It was also dark, but I am not sure that was necessary.
