Not wanting to invest alot of money. The floor in the kitchen is gray laminate.

If it is wood you can sand and refinish it. You may want to consider putting down a laminate flooring that just snaps in place and is easy to DIY.

Sheet vinyl might be a good solution. Depending on the size of the kitchen floor there is a possibility that you can buy a left over piece or remnant. If you don't have a problem with moisture you can glue it down to the slab. The patterns and styles available today are wonderful. You can get a pattern that looks like wood planks, another looks like tile with grout lines and of course tons of patterns. Another good thing is that it is totally water proof which is good in a kitchen. And it is easy to install yourself. Just take your time and use a very sharp utility knife or heavy duty box cutter. It is better to not cut enough then to cut too much off. Good luck!
