Is it really cost effective for the homeowner to do the demolition phase of a remodel himself?

I would ask your contractor. We saved money by doing finishing ourselves when we had a load bearing wall taken down. So, we painted and hung trim and molding. But, they told us there was no discount if we did demo like taking down the cabinets or drywall ourselves, since they could do that so quickly it didn't save them much time at all. Good luck!

I have done some demolition- the answer I think is more dependent on the contractor. what I removed was the useable cabinetry- there was a delay generated on one of the contractors other job site. it kept the time line intact.

Ask your contractor. I'll tell you one thing, I feel like demo is always harder than I think it's going to be and usually bites me in the butt!

Yes, yes, and yes!! We saved so much doing the demo in our bathroom. It isn't just the demo! You can also clean and prep the space to save even more time. In this case time = money.
