    What about a kitchen counter?

It has to be scrubbable and heat resistant. Wood butcher block tops are ok for a tiny accent area, but will completely fail otherwise.

Ceramic tile counter tops must have 1/16” or no grout joints and it must be Epoxy Grout, which is not for beginners.,

Plastic laminate can be re-laminated and Formica published an on-line video on how to do that. Not really a beginners project either unless you have an experienced helper.

Granite pre-cut countertops are reasonable in big cities, where there is competition. You will need a diamond saw blade and proper substrates.

Stainless steel is not easy to work with if you don’t have access to a machine shop’s services.

Glass for an island is cool, but it has to be tempered and properly fastened.
