If you purchase and use a really good primer first, you should have no problem then painting them white.

Depending on the style of your cabinets, and the style of your kitchen there are a couple of ideas...

I hated the oak cabinet doors , they were from the 70's and had a scalloped edge in each corner . I measured and cut a piece of beadboard to cover the area , then glued it down and painted it white, I have a vintage cottage/ industrial look.

Another thing you might try is , they make removable wallpaper, several sites offer such unique prints now , not like our grandmother's wallpaper. Everything from plain to funky prints are available. Also an easy fix it you like changing your look frequently.

    Wallsneedlove.com & tempaper.com are great !!!

I don't know what the solution is, but I don't think that just primer will do it. The grain in oak is texture as well as color. You won't get that smooth, glossy finish you want unless you use something to actually fill in the grain and then sand it down. Google it. I'm sure someone out there has already done this and posted it.

you can do a fine sanding, the put a couple of coats of paint and primer using a sponge paint roller, then a top coat of polyurethane. I painted my wooden cabinets without the sanding part and you barely see the grain. here is a before and after.
