How can I keep animal accidents from seeping through cracks in floor?
I have carpeting and want to go to a wood look. I prefer engineered flooring, but will I have to go to vinyl to be happy?!!! The cats are getting older and having accidents.

We love our vinyl floor. We also have cats that are getting older and having a floor that is waterproof is a real blessing. They have patterns now that give the look of hardwood but with the convenience of vinyl. We actually had someone visiting that asked about our tile floors (just good old vinyl that looks like tile).
I had the same dilemma. Finally I threw caution to the wind, and I installed unfinished hardwood with a custom finish. Not going to lie, it wasn't cheap, and I have a small house by most standards. But . . . If finished properly, liquid beads on top and easy to clean. Pet urine can dull the finish over time. In my case, I am wall to wall furniture and rugs, so no one will ever notice but me. When the pets pass on I will have refinished. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I ripped out high end laminate that I absolutely detested. One of my worst homeowner decisions, but you live and learn. Laminate is not good with kids, pets and spills.
