How can I redo these used stools?

Got these stools from a remodeled restaurant. They are all a little rusty and flaking chrome paint on the bottom; but the padded tops are in good shape. They are inside only. The teal is not my color. I would like a contemporary look. Thx!

  • Great find! I would sand/wire brush the rust and flaking chrome off the bottom, tape them off and spray paint them. Since you don't like the teal, I would sew covers for them in a color you like. I wouldn't try painting them, since they're in such good shape and you might want the color teal at a later date!

The tops looks like faux leather and should be easy enough to paint - this video will show you how to do it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUoPHzdgLf0. You can also spray paint the bottoms after they've been sanded down a little to get rid of any lose flakes of paint and grime

What color and fabric would you want these? My thought on seeing these was thatI love the teal but perhaps they could be turned more neutral if that's what you hope for.

Love these retro stools. What a great find. Forget the slipcovers unless they would be super tight. Otherwise they'd look tacky. Clean, sand, spray paint the bases. Spray vinyl paint for the teal. Get it at an auto parts store. Dupli Color for auto upholstery. Better than what you can get at the big box stores. I can just picture Ritchie, and the Fonz sitting on them.

I would differently clean and spray paint the bottoms. They are so great in the original condition and such a popular color, have you thought about placing them for sale. That way you could get the contemporary stools that you love.

Great advice from others so far. Sand and spray paint the base. I personally love the look of the teal and the shape but since you don't you could redo the bases and then likely sell them and get what you want. Great find!

Def sand and respray the metal part, taping off the vinyl. You can use this paint in just about any color your heart desires and it won't peel, flake or crack. Not terribly expensive either. Be sure to use the deglazer and the finish coat to keep it looking new. And you can use this paint indoors. (Its a dreary rainy day where I'm at)

On Angelus site, they will tell you how to prepare vinyl. I'm doing a couple of purses myself:)
