A picture would be very helpful so we could see what you are working with.

  • Build a base for it to sit on to make it taller if that is what you need.

Better to add to bottom, than at top. Take off old kegs and add a nice base. Depending how much talker you need could apply baseboard to base for a more finished look.

    Karen,

Does it need to be the exact dimensions of the night table? Since it will be hard to match the existing stain, use something complimentary. Look for night table/dresser organizer drawers or look for a small decorative crate or storage box.

You could get a thickish piece of wood and have the edges beveled on 3 sides then attach on top. I did this to raise and slightly enlarge an existing mantle. My mantle was painted white though so it was easy to paint it all to match.

Hi Karen, I can't take a photo now because I'm away from home. Sorry. I'll try to describe better in words. I had a 5 1/2 ft long wooden mantle that was essentially part of a fireplace woodwork surround that was all painted white. The mantel was 6 inches deep and just looked wimpy. So I got a good quality pine board 6 ft long, 8 inches wide and 1 inch thick. After having 1/2 inch cut off the width and 1 inch cut off the length, I had a rounded edge milled onto 3 sides (left one of the long sides squared off--rounded edges looked like the edges on the 4th piece of wood on the lefthand row in the link below.) After painting it to match my existing mantel, I used wood glue to attach it to the existing mantle with the square edge against the wall. This gave me a mantle top that was 2 1/2 inches longer on each end, 1 1/2 inches deeper, and 1 inch higher than what I had. Much more in balance with the room and the fireplace size. And mantel tops are usually larger than the base anyway. I thought that might work with a nightstand with the squared edge to the back. Of course it is hard to match stain but sometimes tops on furniture are painted instead. I hope that all makes sense!
