How can I reface our tile around the fireplace?

My contractor said he wants to lay tile right over the existing tile but I'm not sure that it will hold up over time. Has anyone done this?

Dump that contractor! Did this contractor have a method in order to accomplish this? Tiling 101 - never tile over tile. If he wants to do this, with no regard for craftsmanship, just wants to do a crap job, collect your money and run. You will be left paying again for his sloppy work. If he cuts corners on this, what other things has he done incorrectly and, most likely, not up to current code? Don't give this dude one red cent until you have ALL his work inspected by the local permit office inspector. Here is how to hire a real, licensed contractor that will take pride in their work.

Please heed Naomie's sage advice. You will be miserable, and poorer if you continue with this guy.
Find someone who will do what you want. Research tiling methods to give yourself an edge, if you prefer, but realize it's your money.
It can be done, yes. Should it? Probably not. Especially if it's a contractor doing it - he should have the ability to remove it and replace it.
