If your wood has only small defects and the remainder of the wood is fine, you can spot-sand and stain. Fold a piece of 100-grit sandpaper into a small strip, and then use one finger to sand the defect. Sand parallel to the grain over the defect in an oval-shape. Keep the sanding area as small as possible.

You will need to sand off the existing finish before staining to get even coverage!

If it has stain and top coat on now, you would have to at least sand off the top coat for any stain to stick. If you want to do it right, you should use citristrip and remove all the topcoat and stain and go from scratch. You may have better results.

  • You can clean them well, and try gel stain right over what you’ve got. Do a test patch on the back of a door to see if you’re going to be happy with it.
