Can an amaryllis bulb be re-planted once it dies and loses its flower?

Has anyone tried to re-pot and revive an amaryllis bulb? If so, what are the steps to do this and how successful have people been??

If you live in a warm climate, they do well. When I lived in Dallas we used to plant them in March.

In Connecticut, most people will not plant them outdoors. We have warm temperatures in the summer but in New England the story goes that if you blink your eyes the thermometer will go from 80 degrees to 50 degrees! It's very unpredictable from day to day. I will try replanting the bulb indoors and see what happens! Many thanks for your response!

Most bulbs will die off before it grows new leaves and flower stalks. Depending on where you live, some bulbs need to be dug up and brought in for the winter. Look up the flower and it will tell you what its soils needs are and for the dormant period and when to start watering, etc. for it to come back.

Mine is always inside because of the temperatures in Connecticut. I would be replanting it inside the house. I may try my luck! Thank you!

  • Well I do it all the time. Once it has bloomed out, I take them and stick in a pot with good potting soil. I have a small section where I store all the bulbs in pots outside. I toss water on them occasionally and sometimes they even sprout. If they do, I just bring them out to enjoy, then put back when bloomed out. Then in the fall when you wish to force them for the holidays, I unearth them and place in the bulb container and add water and set them where they receive indirect sunlight. I change the water every other day so it doesn't get stinky and slimy. In 6 to 8 weeks they bloom.

I work in an office with 500 people in a huge high rise office building. A popular office gift in spring and fall. Most people used to toss them when bloomed out, now they bring them to me. My office is a plant hospital of sorts. I keep them and bring some back when they sprout.

Occasionally, some do not rebloom, but not all that often.

Mind you I am in zone 9 so very easy to do with minimal effort.

It sounds like most of you live in a warm climate. My amaryllis is always inside. I live in Connecticut and aside from the summer, it's not really warm all year around. When it dies out, I was told to remove the bulb from the soil and let it dry out. I was going to try and plant it again to see if I have any luck. I may try what Naomie does which is place it in water and see if I get any sprouts! Thanks for your input!

I always leave my seasonal bulbs like amaryllis in the pot, just quit watering it. Sometimes one may not come back, but it is usually one of the old ones. I do repot them in New soil every couple of years, I don't put mine in water, a lot of times if the are rooted in water they don't like to go back to being in soil.
