What is the best way to prep kitchen cabinets to paint?

We have wooden oak cabinets in our kitchen that are needing a facelift. I would like to just paint them, but do we need to sand them all down, or is there some other sort of prep that I can do that won't require sanding them all???

If you want your finish to last you need to bat least hand sand the sheen off.
Best method: wash down with TSP, sand sheen off, dust off, prime with oil based primer, lightly sand, paint 2 coats of oil based paint. No top coat needed.
Of course, remove doors, Mark on back where they go back, remove hardware, before you start. The sanding is really not that bad. You don't want your paint to peel and then have to replace the cabinets.
I recommend sanding them. Get an electric sander (not very expensive) and it's really and truly not that bad. You'll be glad you did when you see the results!
You only need to sand any gloss down so it is dulled. You will want to use a primer and a good quality paint in an enamel finish. Sherwin WIlliams or a Benjamin Moore paint store can set you up with a good quality paint and primer for your project.
If your cabinets are in decent condition, you can just apply a deglosser, clean , prime and paint them. Here is how I did my bathroom cabinets.
