Put new fabric on the awning. You will still have the benefits of the shade put the new look of the new fabric. And/or paint the frame. The awning could have a completely new look by changing both the fabric and frame.
You need a heavy weight fabric which is generally sold at a tent and awning store. You could fasten it on using velcro strips. Remove the old one first and use for a pattern.

Make sure fabric is rated for exterior use.
Deb...a photo would help a lot to see what you're dealing with. I'd love to take a look.
Carefully disassemble the old cover then buy some outdoor fabric the same size and use the old piece as a pattern
to cut the new piece identically the same.
Then just reassemble the cover onto the frame.
