That way you can have tomatoes into November. I am also in Zone 9 but in hot and extremely dry Southern California. Where I live, mine go dormant during the summer due to extreme heat. Yours should do better as you have higher humidity. I am pulling the last of my tomatoes this week, ripe or green.

See when the nurseries are selling them. That's the best indicator.
We have 2 season in Florida. September is when I put my winter tomato in. April's usually my spring planting.
