Giving New Life to a Roadside Salvaged Chair

When you see a broken old rocking chair on the side of the road, do you walk past, or do you see the potential and drag it home?
We found this Scandinavian designed rocking chair sitting helpless on the side of the road. It had a missing arm, broken spindle, and had a ton chew marks (hopefully from a dog!)

We dragged it home, knowing that we could breathe new life into this tired piece of furniture.
The chair needed a lot of help. It was missing one entire arm! Which would need to be recreated, holes would need to be filled, a broken spindle replaced, and the whole thing would need a new coat of paint.

Up first, that missing arm! We removed the other arm, and used it as a template to cut a new arm out of a spare piece of wood.
We traced the one arm onto a piece of wood, and cut it out with a jig saw. Here you can see the new arm cut and ready to be installed!
Now, for those chew marks! We used wood filler to fill the chew mark holes, and then sanded it smooth. After we put the broken spindle back in place, and gave the chair a thorough sanding, the chair was ready for paint!
We made a DIY Spray booth (see blog for more details) and using spray paint from a big box store, we gave the chair a new glossy black paint job!
Chair AFTER!

Doesn't it look brand new?!
This is the arm that was full of dog chew marks, can you believe it's the same chair?

A little bit of TLC, turned a roadside find, into a brand new piece of furniture!
