Doesn't really work well, Becomes stiff and crunchy. You can look into dying it. I've never done that, but know people have had success with that.
Wool carpet can be successfully dyed.
Acrylic can be with some synthetic dyes.
Nylon carpet cannot be dyed without so much heat that it melts the manufacturer’s glue that holds the tufting into the carpets backing layers.
If this is wall to wall carpet and stretched over pad, getting the pad saturated will cause many more problems.
If your carpet is over 10 years old and has had steam cleaning done to it, it’s time to save up for new carpet and very good pad.
You might start by just replacing a very high traffic spot, with tile, like at the exterior door.
