I would lay a drop cloth ( I use vinyl shower curtains from the dollar store ) Then put painters tape along the top edge of the baseboards.

my husband is a neater painted than I am , he holds a piece of cardboard along the top edge of the baseboard and wall and just moved it along as he paints. And he just told me you can paint your baseboards , I never knew this !!! I want to look into this , has anyone done this and did it last ok ? That way they could blend right in .

Tape along floor and wall. Some people use most anything to block areas, but you will have to wipe down the blocker as you move it. Strips of paper, newspaper, old magazine pages taped into place can work. Keep wet rag handy to remove any oops before they dry.
