  • If the old linoleum is in good condition - no holes or gouges, you should be able to install the new over the old.

Likely will need a skim coat though especially if the old linoleum was embossed. Also older floors may contain asbestos. If so, if you can it's better to cover than remove because the problem with asbestos fibers comes only when the material is sanded or broken up. I'm told by some, true linoleum (made from linseed and cork) never contained asbestos but the term linoleum is often used to refer to many floor coverings including vinyl.

Ann is right, any irregularity in the existing linoleum will show up on the new.

It also depends on what product you are installing over the old. If something flexible like more linoleum, then you'll see any preexisting imperfections. If something sturdy like tile, then not so much. But the tougher new cover could crack if pockets are below it.

It would depend on what you are installing over the linoleum. Vinyl stick on tiles--you can leave the linoleum--just use an adhesive primer first. Floating plank floor--you can leave the linoleum--but your doorways might be an issue if you are adding a great deal of height. Carpet--you can leave the linoleum. New linoleum--maybe be able to see any old linoleum pattern if the old has a textured pattern. Ceramic tile--remove the linoleum.
