They make a flat edged tool for this but if you have a flathead shovel it will work just fine.

First cut the carpet in strips using a box cutter or an exacto knife, qand rip it out or use your flathead for this if it's stubborn.

Next sweep the floor to get any dust up.

Then your ready too scrape the glue with that flathead shovel. (My preference over spending hours on my knees).

If you run into any stubborn spots, get your electric sander and have at it. Should only take a weekend, depending on the size of the room.

Sweep again and run a damp mop over the surface.

If it's a cement floor make certain you repair any & all cracks. If it's wood replace any warped, sagging or cracked boards. Also if you're going to leave it like that, you need to seal the floor, whether it's wood or concrete.

After it's sealed you can stain, paint (requires sealing again afterwards) or have new carpet or tile layed down.

    Have fun & Good luck,

    Marilyn

Another option is to cover the glue residue with a thin luan plywood and then add your new surface.

    Hi Carol,

Start Pulling up the carpet from the farthest corner of the room. When that is all up, use a Paint Scraper to remove the glue.
