How do I repair my walls after removing wallpaper?

When I took down an added chair railing type of half wall to wallpaper I learned why it had been put there (in the bedroom) they had done a horrible choppy job of cutting holes for outlets. I went a head and did temporary fixes so I could still wallpaper. Now I want to change it out but want to do it right this time. I don't want to do sheet rock on my own so am looking for other options.

if it's not so bad, you could buy bigger outlet covers.

  I have 5 outlets and 3 of them are probably cut out 4' x 6" or larger

  Yikes! Yeah a bigger outlet cover won’t work. You can buy panels that are thin, sort of like a bead board, but with no texture just flat and attach that to your walls. I hope that makes sense.

Some gaps can be fixed using caulk.

You can use sheet goods such as wainscoting and paint it to suit your tastes.

  What is wainscoting? the ceiling/walls have an angle so how hard is it to cut? I'm doing this solo.

  Below is a picture of wainscoting.
  
  As as far as cutting angles, you normally put a molding at the top of the wainscoting this will hide any imperfections in the cuts.

wainscoting is normally a panel that covers the lower part of the wall with trim at the top.
