How do I insulate my windows?

Its my family room. I have five brand new windows put in. The another room is right off my family room which is the laundry room that's right off garage. The rest of house stays warm. My bedroom is over the master bedroom where that's hot all year long.

    What is your question?

The question is why are those two rooms cold all the time. One room is family room we just new windows. Now the laundry room is off the family room that room extra cold.

Thank you Charmain for adding more information to your first question. If you live in a northern US area where it gets really cold consider using the shrink wrap plastic kits for your windows. You said the windows were new but adding the shrink plastic helps. I do not know what kind of windows you installed but adding the shrink wrap may help keep out drafts. Also--layer your window treatments for the winter so you have some heavier drapes you can pull closed at night when it is the coldest. If the garage opens into the laundry room you might need to add some weather stripping and slide on a draft stopper at the bottom of the door. Do people close the garage door when they park their cars? It does get mighty cold if someone forgets! Do you have any heat in your laundry room? Cold air moves towards warm air so you might have to consider adjusting your heat in that space--the cold air is moving into that area. As for your bedroom--if the bedroom below is hot all the time and your bedroom above is cold you are not getting enough heat circulation. You didn't state what kind of heat you have. If you have a forced air system you may have to add more duct work to get more heat to that bedroom.

Was it cold before the new windows were put in? What kind of windows? You could try blackout curtains, they also insulate and protect against cold. When the windows were installed, did they pack insulation between the window studs? Or it could be you need more insulation, especially in the ceiling as you lose the most heat from the top. Also check the wall between the garage and laundry room for insulation.

  • If you had new windows put in, the room should not be cold. Unless your furnace is not big enough for the size of the house. Call your local utility companies, most give free home inspections, you just might need more insulation. Could be any number of factors - even a consult with contractor might be a good idea.

All good points. If it wasn't cold before, are you using all the same drapes/curtains you used before the window replacement? If it was cold before & the problem was assumed to be old windows but that didn't fix it everyone posting has suggested things I'd look at (furnace size, insulation, weather stripping etc) Also, is it noticeably colder at specific spots? Like closer to the windows? Or the garage? Can you feel any drafts? Knowing those things may tell you where the heat loss is. Finally, I am not sure I understand your house's layout. Are the cold rooms an addition or part of the original house's footprint?

It was always cold even with the old Windows. The new Windows are Anderson. We had a new furnace and air out in. Do I get an contractor to have looked at.
