Hi Dorothy. I'm Cindy. Peonies are such a beautiful plant. Their extra-large flowers are wonderful to cut and put in vases. Peonies should be trimmed in late Fall. No earlier. The plant will look dead, but it's not dead, it is generating energy for growth next year. In late Fall cut the plant back all the way to the ground. Cover with mulch to protect the entire root system from the winter weather. Hope this helps. Good luck Dorothy.
Trim in late fall to about 1 foot tall.
