Do granite countertops need to be sealed every so often?

Big debate in the family about this.  Our brother says the builder said no.  However, granite is porous so.....I worry about bacteria.

Since granite is porous, I would seal it. It is moisture-resistant, but sealing it will help prevent anything from seeping into it.

Your builder is incorrect. Granite must be cleaned regularly, preferably with distilled water rather than tap water which can have higher calcium levels in hard water areas.

Seal the granite at least twice a year, if you use your kitchen countertops regularly.

Remember to keep oils and acids off the granite, meaning no vinegar, salad dressings, gravies, citrus juices, etc.

Keep cutting boards at multiple locations, because someone will always attempt to place a 'forbidden substance' atop the granite...
