Hi. The site Faith sent to you sums up how to make your own stains for wood. I'll just add to seal completely with paste wax or water based polyurethane. Oil based poly has a yellow tinge to it. Good luck!
I recently used a stain from Old Barn Milk Paint and there was zero fumes and the color turned out beautifully.
you can stain them by brushing on strong tea or coffee just brush on with a paint brush let dry then add layers more until you get your desired color.
