How do I turn an outdoor shed into a living space?

Any other ideas on how to decorate a shed to make it liveable? I'm wanting to live in a shed in my daughter's backyard. Kind if like a mother in law cottage. No bathroom or kitchen, just a bedroom and room for my own personal space. I need decorating ideas.

    Hi, Tina,

    This sounds like fun!

Multiple shelving for your personal items, bedding, books, etc. ,that can be stored in baskets or bins. Sufficient light fixtures and a plush rug with padding. A mirror or two to bounce incoming light. A nightstand or table for bedside, and another for writing, craft area, laptop, etc.

An overstuffed chair and ottoman, or similar for relaxing.

A coffeemaker or electric kettle and mugs, if desired.

    A stand fan, if needed.

A radio, T.V., and any other perk to give you an overall feeling of contentedness!

Check first with your household insurance carrier to see if your premiums (theft, fire, storm damage, etc.) may increase should the existing shed be enclosed enough so that is it sheltered from the weather.

Do you presently have electricity in the shed? What will the source of heating the 'bedroom' be - propane, electricity, etc.?

Even though it may seem like just a 'simple space' you may also need permits for the project. Check with your town office or municipality to see what the bylaws may be regarding additional 'buildings' on properties in your neighbourhood

Hi Tina! I'm sure that would be very exciting.

For a piece of advice, make sure that your shed has a window and a proper ventilation. Paint your shed inside, it should be color white, cream or light gray to make it bright inside.

You can put a single bed, a wall-mounted folding table to save some space when you are not using it, a chair, lampshade, put a wall shelf so you can display some decoration like clock, books, picture frames and small plants. Put a floral or your favorite color of curtain to make it more lively.

I'm pretty sure you will get some ideas on how your shed will become more durable.
