I have an antique slant front desk I believe based on the construction of the drawers and the aging of the interior (behind the drawers). Can anyone give an informed opinion?

I have one that is kind of similar to yours. It was my great grandmothers, she passed in the sixties at a month away from 100, so mine is pretty old. I would look on the back or bottom of the desk for some kind of tag or mark that may help your search.

I thought this type of desk was known as a secretary desk , but there are probably several names for it depending on what part of the country it's from , the time period , or style .

You might find a maker or mark on the drawers, pull them out and look carefully. Beautiful desk !!!

Look for a maker's label or marks. Check inside drawers, inside the frame, the bottom, the back, check for secret compartments and look inside if there are any. Give it a thorough going over looking for any clues as to age, which may help you narrow down a maker as well. Are the nails hand-forged (do you see, for instance, a square iron nail head as opposed to a screw or round head stainless steel nail?) Were pegs used instead of metal fasteners? Keep in mind that during the 1950s after WWII a lot of "colonial" style furniture was mass produced by many furniture companies in quality reproductions, so your piece may not be an antique. Still fine quality, just not more than 100 years old. The style looks like Hepplewhite, simple, elegant, beautiful. The rectangular shaped legs distinguish Hepplewhite from pieces of Sheraton style. Great inlay work!

Look for a stamp and pay attention to the lettering and numbers. I had an antique wardrobe that’s from 1909, after I really looked at the stamp and said that’s not a 1, but an I. (Stamp said wardrobe no. I4) I took it as a 1 and couldn’t find anything till I made the I

The really old secretary desks do not have hinges. The pull down part was supported by wood pieces on both sides that would be pulled out to support the front piece. With the inlaid it is probably french from the early 1900"s.

Some clues are in the dovetailed drawers. If they are hand cut they are usually not as perfect as those done by machine. Also, tbe back of the piece may be covered in boards instead of one piece of wood.

It is a secretary desk. Go on Ebay and type in antique secretary desk with drawers and cubby holes. I found one similar to yours.
