How do I stop banging pipes?

Our pipes bang a lot when water is turned on or off. It got worse when the city recently shut our water off. We bled the pipes as instructed, but it has not helped. Does anyone have a solution or the name of a quality company in Mississauga/Toronto that can fix it?

You could try to bleed them again and maybe call the water department for suggestions. I’m sorry I don’t know a plumber in that area but they should be able to help if necessary.

Contact the city and explain this to them and ask how to remedy the problem.

This is called water hammer where i live.Get a plumber to fix this with an inverted "T" in the water line. The top of the T will be capped off.The t will provide an air cushion or shock absorber. You might also make sure the water pipe is unable to move and make the pipe hit under floors or interior wall framing.

Water hammer..you can buy a couple of "valves" at big box hardware stores in the plumbing department. I had that same problem, but only when the washer ran so I just added them to the faucets for the washer. Problem solved.

You could have an air lock in the pipe so I suggest you turn all of your taps (hot and cold) on at the same time and let them run for a minute or two. This should clear any air locks. You will need an extra pair of hands and eyes for this job. Just make sure there are no stoppers in your drains when you start or you will have an overflow. This is the same procedure which is used when folks turn on their water at the cottage after being drained and off all winter.
