Creative idea for doorway?

I am looking for those creative people out there to help me with something to fit across the top of my kitchen doorway to stop the smoke alarm going off while cooking. Currently I have a towel on a spring rod and while this is functional at stopping the false alarms, it is not very attractive. I needed something that is removable because, after all, it is a doorway. The kitchen décor is brick walls, wood cabinets, with old kitchen utensils on high shelves. Any ideas?

I admit I'm scratching my head on this.

Can you move it further away?

Hello Andrea recently my sister and I removed a range hood at our mothers house to repaint it. Once removed we discovered that when whoever installed the range hood did not vent it properly. My mom's smoke alarm always went off when she cooked. There was a hole in the wall but that was all. The fan would suck out the air but it went nowhere. If for some reason you do not have a range hood then that may be a problem as well. Good Luck CinT

  • Great ideas here. My kitchen is small and by law I am supposed to have one. No matter where I placed it, the darn thing would go off even if I was using the coffee maker. So I take mine down while cooking and put it back up when I am done. Might not help you, but just a thought.

Yes, do you have an exhaust fan in the kitchen? If not, maybe just a small fan placed so it directs air flow away from the smoke alarm would work.

Curtains on a tension rod? Ones that go to the floor. Open all the time except when cooking.

First of all, thank you for your responses. I do not have an exhaust fan as the stove is on an interior wall and the house has a second story. My smoke alarm goes off with showering, and the toaster as well as cooking. I am glad that my coffee maker does not produce a false alarm as Naomie's does...horrible. The suggestion of 2dogal for using a small fan might be a solution as I might be able to put on that shelf above the doorway. Hmmm. Moving the alarm is not a good idea for me as it is at the base of the stairway leading upstairs. Moving to the right puts it closer to the shower and moving it to the left would not protect that vital staircase.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
