Louise, tile requires a few tools:
1) wet tile saw
2) nippers
3) tile trowel for the thinset
4) sharp utility knife for backer board
5) sponge and bucket
And supplies:
1) backer board and special backer board screws
2) thinset
3) grout
4) tile (of course 😊)
5) tile spacers (optional but recommended)
Basic order is to first install the backer board if not already installed. Using a sharp blade, score and snap board to cut. Boards run horizontal just as drywall does.
Working in small sections starting with the most visible area, lay down thinset using trowel. Scrape thinset so that it is even depth with the teeth on the trowel edge.
Lay tile gently, spacing evenly and squaring as you go.
Cut edges with the saw to fit as you advance to the sides and edges of the job.
Allow the thinset to dry and set up before grouting. Grout can be worked diagonally across the grout lines with a large sponge.
Rinse excess grout immediately with a large clean sponge. After rinsing, change water and rinse at least two or three more times until rinse water is clear.
Allow grout to cure for a few days and then seal it with grout sealer. Though this isn't a requirement for installation, it will make your life better in the future.
