How do I start to build a house?

Hire an architect to design it according to your needs and get him or her to draw up plans. Meet with several contractors, check references hire one to build it.

Pick an area for your house and make sure you can get electric and plumbing lines out there. If so, then you can begin the leveling or excavating work for the foundation.

You have to have a cellar put in, wheather poured or concrete bricks. You need a house builder to give you house plans & pricing. Then naturally plumbing & electrical. The house contractor will do all that as well as help with house plans. If you decide to not go with stick house building you may want to explore premade home homes. Still again a foundation, electrical & plumbing. Good luck!

RESEARCH everything you do Get proper permits and legal,licensed,bonded contractors if you need to hire any outside help. Determine what you are going to build your house out of(straw bales,wood,tires,cinder block,etc.)figure out all material costs(plumbing,electric,insulation,roofing,solar,gas,sewage,septic). Then add $ to final cost for xtras,unforseen problems. Determine best place on land/lot that will be cheapest(city-closer to street less cost for city utility lines;country-closer to water source). Grade of land so you are not fighting the elements water flow thru out all seasons. then lay out your ideas in writing of what you want/need in your home # bdrms,bthrms, porches,heat & cooling source,water,plumbing. Draw up plans/blue prints; submit to architect,engineer,general contractors & city for permits. You don't need to spend alot of $ you can find building materials at salvage shops,construction salvage,habitat for humanity resale,craigs list even garage sales,city/county hazmat center for paint etc. You can buy good used tools if you are doing/building yourself.

Where is this lot? Did you do research first to find out what it will cost to run utilities to the lot? Gas, electric, water, sewer? And what type of home you can construct? Did you check with the permit office first?

You need an architect first to draw up plans and blueprints which must be submitted in order to get your permits. Blueprints are not cheap, get your checkbook out.

I would also get a soils expert out to determine compaction and stability of the ground.

For plumbing, are you going to hook up to a city sewer system or have a septic tank? Placement of the home on the lot is crucial. Variances vary greatly from one municipality to the next. Land needs to be graded away from any structure to avoid potential water intrusion issues in the future. Garage? Part of the main structure or separate building?

Raised foundation? Or slab? Are basements prevalent in the area?

As you can see, there are many many things to consider and work out prior to actual groundbreaking. There are hundreds more decisions along the way. Every delay on your part costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars so you better be good and quick about any decision you need to make.
