How to water a Poinsettia plant?

I live in Maine where the winters are harsh. I know the poinsettia plant is a desert plant. How often should it be watered. I always seem to loose them to what I believe is over watering.

    Hi Deb,

Since you are in Maine-yes, it is cold up where you are!

Your poinsettia plant is probably in a pot indoors, what to do is wait for the soil on top to get to the point where it feels slightly damp, give it a day or so after that and water til the dampness returns.

Poinsettia are tropical plants, growing in the tropical forests of Mexico down to Guatemala. Potted poinsettia like growing in a sunny area, water them when dry. If you are not trying to rebloom for Christmas, you can stop fertilizing. Beware Poinsettia are prone to fungus so like you said, don't overwater.😀

Water from a liner, bottom up. This way you won't over water because you can see how fast the plant is drinking. Always check the soil before watering again and in rooms with warmer temperatures the plant will need to be watered more often. Say once or twice a week.

Thank you Carole for your suggestion. I water my African violets that way. I will give it a try. This way they only take what they need, hope it doesn't over water the roots. But will give it a try. Thanks..!!
