Pictures please. Im curious. Is this real marble and why do you want to paint over it?
If it is real marble I would take it out and sell it to a rescued materials store and re-do the area you want to paint. But you didn't say if this is a piece of furniture, a fireplace, or what. If it is furniture, have someone look at yhe piece to give you an estimate for taking of the marble and replacing it with wood. You can take a picture and get your estimate that way if you need to.
But in any event, don't be too quick to paint over stone. You would need to seal it before you painted, tho, or the paint will just soak in.
