What can I do with this huge armoire?

Very pretty piece! I would paint it white (big job so be prepared), and accent with gray, blue so when trends change it will be easy to update. If your walls are white then go with a pale gray or shade of blue so there is contrast against the wall and accent with a darker or complimentary color. Pull out your color wheel and see what you like that coordinates with existing decor. Have you looked here on Hometalk, there are quite a few outstanding furniture makeovers, I bet something will catch your eye.

What a gorgeous piece of furniture!

The wood grain is beautiful and it would cause me to hesitate to paint it, guess I am a member of keep the natural wood group. Unless the wood is in a compromised state, I would leave it as it is.

Do you have room to use it separated into two pieces? Both could sit on the floor and your tv could go on top of one. 🤷‍♀️

I would seperate it if possible, you would have more surface area to put your TV on and it would be lower.

Then if you needed to paint it, I would paint the tops, sides and front edges, mouldings in dark grey. Then the drawers and cupboard fronts in a lighter tone.

I too, love the grain and would keep it natural. Painting furniture is only for the pieces that are so damaged they can't be restored. I love high-boys. They take up less space and make the room look larger.

I, too am a natural wood lover, & would hate to see this beautiful piece ruined

by painting it. A good suggestion, IF you have the room is to divide the pieces, but if not it's great looking just the way it is. I love it!

I would take the top off from the base and use them separately. You could cut one to be shallower, add metal legs, finish as you please and use as an entry console table.

For the top section and depending on your style, you could remove the doors and cut away the inside panel and replace it with something to go with the new finish. Ideas could be wire, metal panels, etc.

Look at all that lovely drawer space! And I bet those big doors hide a hanging rod, or sweater storage space. Frankly, if the veneer is in good condition, I would just clean it up with Murphy’s Oil Soap and use it as is. What a great find!

I would paint it!! 😍People live with pieces they don’t like because they are made to feel guilty for painting wood!! Not everyone likes a lot of wood. Painting this big piece will add lots of color and brightness to your room. Use chalk paint, and it won’t take long. You could maybe even stencil something on the doors, or paint the knobs a different color.

I agree with some others on here, keep this piece as it is, the wood is beautiful. But what I definitely would do is change out all the knobs on it. Clear glass knobs with gold around the base of them would look lovely.

Oh please don’t paint it! It’s a beautiful piece! You can drop it off at my house in Wisconsin if you want to get rid of it 😉

I would NOT paint it. The wood is gorgeous. Painting is very trendy now but trends come and go. New knobs will be pretty. Let us know what you decide .

I agree with not painting it. I think a room is much more interesting when everything doesn’t match. This gives your room interest and character. It could be used as an armoire by adding shelving in the upper part if there aren’t any, or the rod idea suggested above would be great too. Baskets could work inside the top and could be installed like a closet system. A cube system could be built very inexpensively also from and sanded plywood, stained, sealed to separate into whatever dimensions you need for the upper section. So many possibilities!

We have an armoire that we are planning to incorporate into a built-in wall shelf and cabinet system once our dining room get's under construction. We will remove the doors and expose the shelves, build up the top to just below the ceiling and add more shelving.

I love the tiny drawers on your piece. I would love to have them to store all my small crafting trinkets.

I would take out the drawers and doors and refinish the inside installing mirrors on the back and at a slant front to back on the sides. With a tubular light installed just inside the top you would have nice makeup place.

I would clean it up, if u want to darken it sand it a bit and add a darker stain and get some nice knobs and keep it the way it is... beautiful piece of furniture!

Once it is painted you can never remove the paint successfully. You have a beautiful piece of furniture. Sell it to someone who will appreciate it and treat it well.

I agree the wood grain and veneer are really nice and in great condition but with that being said I'm really bad at staining and it does need to be touched up some. I'm definitely more partial to painting. There's nothing like the feel of a good brush, a smooth surface with a great color... it just sets off those feel-good endorphins and I know some of you know what I'm talking about haha. But anyway, I'm thinking of separating the two pieces....making the top piece putting some legs on it and making it into a a buffet type China/ Crystal cabinet....(one of your ideas above) then for the bottom part... because three of the higher drawer tracks needed to be fixed.... Taking those out completely leaving open shelves and leaving 4 bottom drawers. Then using that piece as a TV console. I have a huge living room/dining room that is completely empty. As far as colors... Something too wow and start a color scheme.

I'm totally an amateur and you guys are the pros so tell me how does that sound?

What a beautiful piece of furniture! And what a great storage opportunity for you, especially if you are a crafter. Whatever you choose to do with it, organize like thing with like and then place in the drawers/doors, etc. Make an inventory sheet listing the contents of each drawer and door space and hang inside a handy area in the piece, so you can readily access exactly what you want quickly. This may seem like a lot of trouble, but in the longterm, it'll save you time searching.
