Cooktop without an oven or a range? Depends on budget, gas, electric and size. Also finish. (Yes, color matters) Basic is LG, Kitchenaid, higher end Viking, Thermadore. Costs varies from $500. To $25,000. Need more information.
Gas or duel fuel is preferred by good cooks. What you choose also could effect what type of hood you get too.
Gas burners are easier and faster to adjust the heat. Electric takes longer to heat up, but is often cleaner. Other options exist. I like gas. Enjoy! ☺️
What's your budget? What I have v. What is on my wish list are two separate things. What do you have now? Gas? Electric? I cook over gas and fire (open flame) the best. Not of fan of electric, as a matter of fact, it's a deal breaker for me.
I think your first mission will be to talk about what type of fuel electric or gas. Next you have to determine how many BTUs you actually need out of the burners. When you figured all that out it’s time to start looking for range. In my opinion I would certainly go with something that can be serviced should the need arise.
If you decide to opt for gas, get sealed burners, and at least one simmer burner.
If you have small children, consider safety factors of both, and where control dials are located. If anyone with visual acuity problems will be using the stove, insure there is an easily viewable means of noting which burners are turned on.
Note that gas delivers heat faster, with less need to make constant adjustments. Electric stove tops take much longer for burners to cool down.
Gas appliances require much better exhaust venting, which should always be used, when cooking with gas. Gas burner holes will require periodic cleaning with a pipe cleaner or similar tool.
You can always opt for dual fuel range (gas stove top with electric oven), if you do much baking.
If your area has many power outages, consider gas.

Induction!
Yes, Induction is another good option, but requires special cookware. Lots of options.

Have you consulted consumer reports yet?
