How can I makeover this fireplace?

If you want to brighten up the space, you can paint the brick. I recently painted the brick around my fireplace. I used 2 coats of Kilz primer and 2 coats of latex paint. The paint has held up very well. You can also add a mantel above the fireplace to dress up the area.

Paint it solid white, or in various beige, cream and white shades. Let it hide in plain sight, and add a knockout picture or other eye catcher. It will change the feel of the room. Best wishes! ☺️

I would paint it white and then perhaps spray paint the black and gold areas if possible. You might also attach a floating wooden shelf to use as a mantel.

White wash the fireplace. And paint the screen oil rubbed bronze.

Yes, paint the brick either solid or light coat to make it look aged and worn. The brass around the fireplace is actually a trend that's coming back in style again so if that seems like a lot of work to repaint it...leave it! The mantle I think would make a great impact on updating this fireplace, chunky and dark to stand out against the white brick.

Depending on your budget and skill level, I saw this on hometalk and it is pretty cool.

I tried to copy the entire page of all the crown moldings but for some reason it wouldn’t copy.

There is also something called “ peel and stick molding” I don’t know anything about the product but it’s supposed to work on brick as well.

Crown Molding around your fireplace is simply using the house trim ( prettier) from the edges around the fireplace. It just dresses up your fireplace.

You could paint your fireplace maybe in a light two-toned grey then trim it in the crown molding or just add a floating shelf.

also Fine Woodworking is coming out with an artist that made a mantel with lots of boxes that pull out... I think it’s a grand idea to put something special in a box for every year. Sort of like a running time capsule of “This is Your Life”. His story is quite nice.

We have a brick fireplace that has a beefy stone mantel. The mantel gives depth to a fireplace as does a surround. We have antique brass. Our chimney sweep suggested an insert as they are more efficient.

If if you’re going to paint, make sure the brick is cleaned and don’t use the fireplace until the paint cures - about 30 days
