I don’t know if your frame already has paper stapled to the back, and is enclosed, or if you want to staple paper to the backboard.
If it’s stapled to the back of the frame, carefully cut it off. You can put it back on with some good painters tape, for which your walls will be grateful.
Rather than stapling, consider using double-face tape (any craft or fabric store) for your paper, or complementary-color faux-silk background. You can then position your antique fabric using the double-face tape.
