The best time really is Autumn. They are very, very difficult to get rid of. Many use Round-Up - but if they're in your flower bed be very careful. You can use a sponge paint brush to brush on the herbicide. Also, because they have waxy leaves, many recommend using a surfactant - like dish soap to allow the herbicide to stick to the leaves. If you pull them up, even the tiniest bit of root will create another plant. Diligence and determination will be your best friends :)

The best time to spray is when violets are in full bloom in May. The food reserves in the roots and rhizomes are at their lowest point because they have used those reserves to push out new growth and bloom in the spring

If you can still see them(not dead & gone or buried in snow) you can spray them. Use Round Up. Spray the leaves directly keep sprayer low to keep spray directed onto plant you want to kill. Round-Up works by absorbing in thru leaves down into plant killing root system. Every one is freaking out about Round-Up being cancerous well all herbicides & pesticides are or can cause liver, kidney damage. Just follow safety directions they are on bottle for reason. Don't use in any wind, and do not get in wet formula, use gloves.may need to spray in spring again if you could not get them all because some have maybe already died back into soil for winter.

Check with your local nursery. They know what works best in your area.
