I had often overlooked the wall space behind and underneath the cabinets.

The test tube idea is pretty cool. I like symmetry ones. Be sure to label everything so that it's easily seen as you don't want to have to pull the bottle out to know what it is. Also, I suggest dating all the spices so you know when you purchased them.

Jim...Get a spice rack for cabinet, wall or countertop. Combine any spices that are still in date, throw out those that are out of date. I have decided not to make certain items that call for special spices because they are so expensive and I hate to use once then let them run out of date and finally throw out. Hope this helps!

    • Yes I agree! Some spices are very expensive, Saffron, etc. See if you have stores where you can purchase individual amounts. Whole Foods and Sprouts both carry open stock spices, typically the harder to find and expensive herbs or spices. Whole nutmeg has always been difficult for me to obtain in my area, typically I purchase when I am on the east coast or south. Seek out those stores that might offer this service. I am happy to spend just a few dollars v. A boatload for that one random item that can make or break a dish.

Purchase only what you will actually use on a regular basis. No point in purchasing large containers of a once yearly used spice. Transfer amounts to smaller containers and keep the extra amounts in a pantry or in your basement.

Appropriate one kitchen cabinet shelf to baking spices and another shelf for cooking spices.

Store alphabetically, in similar containers, or store by frequency of use. Obviously, place taller bottles at rear of shelf. Plastic shelving bins with multi height racks are very helpful, but measure all cabinet dimensions and height of all spice containers before purchasing.

Spices are best stored away from heat, humidity, and light.

We went through our spices about a month ago....so many were out of date and ready to be thrown away.....Now have just a manageable few which fit in our spice cupboard.
