Shilo,. If your daughter is a preteen, make it several colors. If she is a teenager, make it a light color, or match it to her furniture. I wouldn't sand or paint it, I'd stain it. Home Depot or Lowe's paint department can help out with that. You might need primer, ask there, wipe it down with a soft dry rag. Aloha!

You could turn it into a mirrored piece. There are some incredible DIY tutorials on utube, and that looks like an easy piece to try it on. Also Modge Podging a beautiful paper on it would be fun.
I say painting it is easiest, use chalk paint for great results. Annie Sloan is good, and so is the DecoArt chalk paint. Not a lot of prep beyond cleaning is needed for a chalk paint makeover.
