You can buy over the door hangers. Back the metal with some felt, leave the bit over the door as it will make it too thick.

You can also back the wreath with fabric too, or stick chair leg felt pads.

If you think that the hook will be too thick to go on the door. Then use fishing wire. Connect to the wreath hang over the door and hook onto a command hook that's been fixed upside down on the other side of the door.

    Hello Arlene.

Careful examination and selection with looking at the backside of your wreath choices when shopping.

I now have a fabric covered foam wreath and its so much better than the scratchy grapevine wreaths. Its mounted to a thumb tack at the top of the door.

Use a hanger made specially for this, hooks over the door.

Hi Arlene, you can buy felt self stick pads at the dollar store or any hardware store, place some on the side that will touch the door to keep scratches from happening

And apparently they make pads that fit wreaths you can find them on Amazon

I place a Command hook upside down on the interior side of our front door and use twine, ribbon, or fishing line to hang the wreath, You can also place felt on the back of the wreath, like Debker mentioned. This tutorial has an example of what I'm talking about with the hook:

Use a removable command hook for hanging.
