It's up to you. You can go the various ways. Alphabetical by authors last name. Genre is popular, then by author. Most of my books are non-fiction. I like to keep genres together. Watercolor, Plant care, Plant identification, Doge care etc. in groups. I don't know the authors so I don't go that far. Plus I have a problem with size. My shelves are not all the same height so if there is a genre that is mostly shorter books that's great but if there's a major size shift, I just put the shorter books above the very tall books. Now here's the part you won't believe, I was a librarian in an elementary school I lived the dewey decimal system. It's practical for finding things in a public library, maybe if a home library becomes huge and you need to catalog your material. For most of us how you choose to shelve your books is going to be the way you believe will be the way you will find them fastest. Using a system that won't help you is silly. If you don't know your authors, that's not really a helpful way to organize them, but if you are a fiction reader after putting them together by genre grouping authors together will help you see what you have all ready by that person.

    alphabetically

  • How about a modified version of the Dewey Decimal System? I can't remember authors names and I like to group loosely by subject. Cook books in one section either from smallest book to largest, or if you want, either alphabetically by authors name or name of book. Landscaping books in another section, gardening in another, and so on.

My books are all over the house and easier for me to find when i need them.

I like to organize them with all books by the same author in a group and alphabetize the books in each group.

I have hundreds of books, almost all of them in one room that I have filled with various bookcases from antiques to the cheaper kind you put together. Only one is really tall. That one I have mostly hardcovers and photo albums. All books that are a series type or the author has written many book go in the same area, not having enough space for everything, I put some of them behind the same author if they are paperback books. I even put books on top of them if I have a lot of them to keep them together. Like Oberlinmom, I put like books together, such as gardening, my moms and my nursing books, various bibles that I have inherited, etc. Any kids type books go in one bookcase because they are of so many sizes and I put some down on there backs with the really tall ones and stack then up and then continue with others standing upright. I still have a couple of boxes of books that are seldom read anymore that haven't made it to a book case, but I ran out of bookcases for them, so they will stay in boxes for a while longer. I need to put them in another room that has some wall space for another bookcase or two. The rest of the room is used for plants that I have to bring into the house in the fall, my large terrarium, a few orchids and other plants that live n the room permanently.

We made this pretty simple built-in for our books - it's an IKEA hack. https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2018/04/how-to-diy-ikea-built-in-bookcase.html Then we sorted them into fiction and non-fiction.
