How do I paint fireplace brick?
My fireplace brick is ugly and I want to either whitewash or paint it white or gray. The metal around the opening is gold (yuck!) and I want to paint that black.

To paint the metal frame, clean and dry it well, tape the areas around it with painters tape and use some heat resistant paint such as this one. https://www.amazon.com/Rutland-1200-Degree-Brush-Stove-Paint/dp/B000Y4MSPC
Good luck!
Clean the bricks well to remove soot, dust, etc. Use a good scrub brush with a TSP solution. It is extremely important to buy a paint made for masonry. Since brick is very porous and can have a powdery surface, it needs to be paint that will both seal and adhere. It sounds obvious, but read the label and talk to the person at the paint desk for instructions specific to that product.

Use a Metal primer and paint for the brass trim. Make sure it is heat proof if fire is in use!
