Hi there! I need to know how long does it take to paint a room. I am embarking on a project to paint my home, one room at a time. But I need to estimate first how long it will take me. I'm sure this will depend on a number of factors, but I'm looking for some guidelines of how to come up with a round figure, so I can plan when to do the project and fit it into my work schedule. Any tips and advice is appreciated icon !

Hi Debra, I would plan on 2 days per room. You should be able to paint the first coat on the walls in about 8 hours (14' square room). Painting the trims takes a little longer because there's more prep work involved and you have to be a bit more careful when applying the paint.

Hi Debra! Yes there are many factors that enter into getting your room ready for painting, and the actual painting itself. My husband is painting our kitchen and he is taking down all wallpaper that is up, cleaning the paste off, patching holes from picture hooks, etc. Listed below are some ideas for you on a time frame. I know for our project the kitchen will take 2 days.

How big is the room? I saw this online: A professional painter can take 5 to 6 hours to paint the walls and the ceiling of a standard 12 feet by 12 feet room assuming that the condition of the walls is fine, and that it needs an application of two coats of flat paint. Two to 3 more hours may be needed for painting the door, baseboards and windows.

It really depends how long it will take. The detail painting takes the longest and if your room has lots of windows, closets, etc there will be more detail work. The rolling is the fast part! As you get more experience you will get faster. I’d suggest starting on your smallest room to gauge how long it takes you. I usually do the walls first and then the trim after the walls have dried and cured for at least a day. I always use semi-gloss on trim for durability and some shine.

  • Figure at least 2 days per room minimum, or more if you have lots of furniture to move. Prep work is key! Walls need to be washed with TSP and must dry thoroughly be fore taping off and first coat of primer goes on. Let dry thoroughly between coats. Portable fans help speed up the process a bit. Typically I like to work on 2 rooms at once. By the time you are done washing walls in room 2, you can most often go back to room 1 and start taping off (What takes me the longest) and start cutting in and rolling the first base coat. While drying base coat in room 1, you can start taping in room 2 and cutting in and priming. This gives you the least amount of down time, unless, of course, you need the breaks.
