Yes, and that is recommended if there are permanent marks you cannot remoie by soaking it for 3 days in Paint remover.

If however it is In good condition or better, you may take a liking more to Polishing it up with some Brasso.

    Hi Betty,

I'm Linda. Yes they can. I've done it at our home. I had antique brass door handles and as part of an update, I spray painted them black. When you spray paint, the thing to remember is that the paint needs help to stick so a little light sanding can help. Make sure they are super clean with no oils left from hands opening the door. I used vinegar and water with a few drops of Dawn in a bowl, heated it a bit in the microwave and let the handles soak for a while. That got them really clean. The next important step is to use 2-3 LIGHT coats of spray paint. Don't try to change the color with one coat. It will be too thick and can easily come off. Take your time, spray it lightly, let it fully dry, repeat until it is completely coated. Then I used a spray sealer as a final coat - again using several light coats. I hope this helps you. Wishing you the best.

I spray painted a whole set of (glass top) brass living room table legs at one time. Clean dirt and oils off the door handle and spray paint it. It would be best to remove the handle and do the painting in the garage. Otherwise do a good job of masking and protecting the surrounding area - including floor.

I painted several brass handles in my previous house. It works! All previous answers have great instructions. I used Rust-oleum paint spray.
