How do I keep a dog away from a tree?

My step daughter bringing home her unruly/not trained dog for Christmas, what's your best advise to keep her from "peeing" on tree skirt, tree etc. Tree is fake but too big to lift off the ground it is 7ft. Do I just bite bullet and forget a tree this year? Thanks everyone

I would weight down the base. I assume it has X shaped metal legs. Put something heavy on top like big bags of rice, sand, something to make it harder to topple over. You can cover this with a tree skirt/blanket.

As for pee, I'm not really sure how to prevent that if it's an untrained dog.

Licia...Not to be ugly because I'm sure you love and want you daughter home for Christmas with those she loves but I would ask her to crate her dog and take it out to play, run and do it's "stuff". Don't believe that is asking too much. It's your home and she should want to help you protect it! Good luck!

Thank you so much. I do want her home but I'm upset that she lied about dog being house broken. Thanksgiving was a disaster with messes. Going to try again for Christmas. Appreciate your kind words

  • Place the tree on a pedestal. Install a fence around it.

We have a new boy dog rescued October 14th. He wants to mark his new territory. Bitter apple spray did work with this dog. It didn't on one of our previous boy dogs, but certainly worth a try.

If possible, keep the room blocked off with baby gates or close doors unless in the room supervised.

In my opinion, every dog needs training. And so do people. We started the afternoon we brought our new dog home. Those that don't, just invite trouble and bad behavior down the line. People who are too lazy to even train their dog with even the most rudimentary commands shouldn't have a pet in the first place. Get a goldfish. Can you tell I feel very strongly about this subject?

I have 3 dogs, my next door neighbor has 3 dogs, my ex hubby has 3 dogs (sometimes all at my house), our friends have dogs. Everything from a tiny chihuahua to a great dane. ALL have been properly socialized and trained to be off leash in a visiting home or yard without destroying a thing. Requires a certain amount of discipline on the part of the owner. Dogs just want unconditional love and to please you. We as pack leaders need to train them gently without breaking their spirit, what is acceptable behavior.

I have no shame. Her Christmas gift would be lessons with a trainer.

PETS STORES CARRY REPELLLANT TO TREES AND BUSHES, I USE IT OUTSIDE BUT, IT SHOULD WORK ON THE INSIDE. TOO

Dogs tend to avoid heavy citrus odors such as orange. They will akso avoid Ruta Graveolens essential oils, and most likely, clove oil.

I would try the repellent also. Make sure you do not place presents under the tree. We just got another puppy. He is only 8 weeks old so my husband made a sturdy stand-like box and we got a smaller tree to place on top. Obviously that will not work with your seven foot tree, but it works for us. I use bitter lime or apple which is available on Amazon or most any pet store to keep puppies from chewing on valuables. I also use Nature's Miracles when accidents do happen.

I agree that your step-daughter should be doing far more to train her dog. I also believe it is important to spend time with family. If she cannot or will not get the dog trained, she needs to hire a good pet sitter and leave the dog home. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Think about placing a barrier around it so that the dog cannot get to it. Keep the dog in a cage while it is in the house.

Petsafe makes an indoor version of an underground radio fence that is very affordable. place the transmitter inder the tree skirt and it won't interfere with your decor. Put the receiver collar on the dog and you're done!
