How do I spruce up the interior of a 70’s ranch house?

If you have shutters, you could paint them a bright color... or you could paint the door also. You might also consider putting a pair of potted evergreens flanking the door.

Depending on what the outside of the home is made of, you could always paint it. Replace the front door to something a little more modern.

Many ways. Add stone to lower section, remove stone, paint, remodel walls, or other things. A photo would be helpful to see what needs to be changed. You can also watch episodes of Fixer Upper and other shows on HGTV & DIY Network for inspiration. Also, you can talk with a local contractor or real estate agent for ideas on curb appeal.

In order to receive more helpful answers, more information is needed. Photos and a bit more detail about what particularly bothers you about the house would be helpful. For example, if exterior, is it the color, the door, the entry in general, the yard, the plantings, the walkway, etc.? (Also, part of your question specifies exterior, part interior.)

This is what it looks like now. Fall has arrived so landscaping isn’t the best right now.

I really don’t like the rock especially by the front door so I’ve started to remove it.

First, you have a lovely home, so don't be hard on yourself. It has great mid-century charm.

To play on the mid-century feel, perhaps incorporate some more mid-century design elements, but with a modern twist. A coat of fresh paint in a bright, fun color on the door would be quite welcoming and attractive. Some extra light - perhaps pointed toward the door - in the entry would be helpful, too.

Removing the stone, at least on the part you already started, will open things up and give a more airy feel. If it were me, I would take a break after removing that part, do whatever other upgrades I decided on, and give it a couple seasons before deciding whether to remove the stone under the window.

I can't tell from the photos if the dark rectangular shape along the right side of the photo is more stone or bushes. If bushes, removing or reshaping them to be individual bushes that are smaller than the current set up would be lovely and open. If stone, perhaps some plantings of bright and/or light colored vegetation in front of it would soften and brighten it. Natural shapes in a variety of heights and shapes would create interest. Ideally, some of that would be grasses that dry and winter over well so that you still have visual interest in colder months.

Your potted plants are lovely. Wish I had your green thumb! Might it be possible to move them to that area just in front of the porch to fill it in a bit - in the pots - and surround the pots with crushed stone of some sort? That would not only be attractive, but would also free up space on the porch to create a sitting area. A couple of chairs and a side table or a glider swing would make a great place to sip a morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine....

One other important thing that too many people don't consider is to make sure you have your house number displayed clearly and prominently somewhere, whether on the house itself or on the mailbox or near the driveway. That is vital for emergency vehicles.

I have to say before submitting this that I truly think your house is charming and lovely. I, too, live in a mid-century, but your house has much better character than mine and a real mid-century feel that evokes the best of that school of design. You are blessed indeed!
