If they are dying and turning brown cut off all the dead stuff. Everything else is depends on the plant but if they are getting too overgrown then trim them back
Hi Steve. I'm Cindy. I use the Old Farmer's method of pruning which is: from Spring thru Fall, only prune during months that have an "R" in it's name. For example you should prune in ApRil but not in May. April contains an R and May does not have a R. I like this method because it's easy to remember.
I would look up your landscaping plants and write down when they recommend trimming them back to have as a reference for the future. Different ones may need to be done at different times for the best results with their growth, or if they flower, so that you get flowers each season. Some flower on old wood, some on new.

What do you have? Each plant is different. If they get scraggly and unkempt, yes you can trim back.
