How can I help my Pulmeria plants?
Hi guys. Because all my pulmeria plants are in planters and not the ground, I have been moving them under mylarge overhang on roof to prevent them from getting so saturated with rain. Last year I lost 2 of them as the plantersjust don't drain fast enough when it rains and they get root rot. Is there possibly another way to help them. I don'thave dirt on my patio and we are restrickted on what we can plant in our yards. Thanks

Hi Penne. I'm Cindy. There is another way to protect those plants and their root systems. If your pot doesn't have enough holes for drainage, besides drilling more holes, you could put rocks in the bottom of your pot. A good 3 or 4 inches of rocks works well. Next put a layer of newspaper on top of the rocks. Then comes the soil and finally, the pulmeria plant. This way, if it does get a lot of water, the roots will be safe. Hope this helps. Good luck Penne and Happy Holidays.
Another solution instead of rocks or coarse gravel is to use empty plastic bottles, cover with newspaper, then soil and then the plant. It makes moving this much lighter to move. Of course you have proper drainage as Cindy suggested.
Both of these answers are good. I use plastic bottles in the bottom of big planters, too, for weight, and for not needed to add such big amounts of potting mix.
