How can I protect a new vinyl fence from mowers and weed whackers?

I need to protect the vinyl fence on the three outside neighbor’s sides from damage from weed wackers on the bottom. It will eventually be a new fence from Irma once it goes up. Inexpensive but sturdy ideas would be great.

Other than a border, I have no idea.

Make a circle of concrete around post add decorative gravel on top. Make neighbors aware weed eaters harm your fence. I never would have thought of that.

The first answer is your weed-wacker. Get one that has a flip out barrier so the string cannot go outside. The make sure it is always out.

    Hi JaneM,

You could use vinegar and salt to kill all of the grass under the fence. The salt ruins the soil for plant growth for quite a while, but not forever. The problem is that you'll have to go into their yards to do it. If the fence is on the property line that could cause a problem. You might want to check with your local building inspector to find out what rights you have with the outside of the fence when it faces someone else's property. Putting gravel under the fence is a good idea too, but eventually the grass will grow over it or weeds will grow in it when they are blown in from the wind. Another thought would be to call the manufacturer and ask them what they suggest. How much damage will the weed wackers do? A third option would be to get some aluminum garden trim to protect the bottom of the fence. You just have to push it into the ground but again you'll have to have access to your neighbors property. Maybe just asking them not to use a weed wacker and telling them you'll do the trimming for them would work. I hope this gives you some ideas so that you can figure out what you can do legally and make it work with your neighbors. Wishing you the best.

get vinyl border edging and stakes to hold it or you can do a edging out of pressure treated deck boards with stakes and screw the boards to the stakes .I used plastic edging to protect a vinyl surround for my air unit outside
